2012 Winter Pledge Drive

WBJC's volunteers are the best!

What a great pledge drive!

I am always touched and amazed at how you, the listener, steps up and stands for what you care about.  It’s truly during the pledge drives when I am reminded that we do something that matters to a great many people.  From the volunteers who spend their precious time taking the calls and sorting through all the paperwork aftermath, to the local food donors who support us with their wares, to the listener who decides that now is the time to join the membership ranks, and finally to the returning member who renews their commitment to classical music on WBJC… they all tell me that what we do is important to you,  OUR LISTENERS!

The details:  1046 of you called in and helped us raise over $118,000 dollars, with 375 of those being NEW members!  81 of you were online supporters!

Thank you to our food donors, volunteers and to everyone who pledged support of classical music, opera, vocal and WBJC!!

I can’t find the Listen Buttons!!

I’m hearing from many people who aren’t able to see the Listen Now part of the front page, or are having various graphic errors.

  • 1st, here are the direct streaming links to hold you over:

  • 2nd, could you email me details about what browser/version you’re using and what operating system (Mac OS v.X, Win XP Pro SPx, Vista etc.)  dross@bccc.edu
  • 3rd, if you could attach a screen capture, that would help me understand what you are/not seeing.  Simply press the Print Screen button on your keyboard, open Paint and right-click Paste or CTRL+V then save the file.  Attach it to your email to me.

WBJC’s new website!

All of us here at WBJC have been working hard in eager anticipation of this day… our new website launch! It’s been a labor of love, but ultimately worthwhile to connect with you, our listeners. We took what worked from the old site, and made it better, then we added new things into the mix! My personal favorite is the Word on Wine page with downloadable podcasts.

This site was created to be dynamic and interactive. You can post comments to the hosts’ blog entries and on show pages. Eventually, we’d love to have some of our regular volunteers and long-time members send us articles for the site. We also envision some form of member log-in area with special content. We have big ideas, and we need your help to see them finished.

As you discover the great resources this new website provides (program listings, event calendar, host blogs, live streaming) please take a moment to post a comment below, or drop us a line on the Contact Us page and let us know what you think! Your feedback will help us develop a site that will better serve you.

01/01/12 New Year’s Day from Vienna 11am

Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons makes his much anticipated second appearance at the helm of the Vienna Philharmonic for their 2012 New Year’s Concert. This concert series is so insanely popular, the Vienna Phil holds a lottery for ticket sales a year in advance!

Don’t worry, you won’t have to go any further than WBJC to enjoy this long-standing tradition.

The live broadcast of the New Years from Vienna is something I both look forward to and dread. As a fan of European performances, I truly enjoy hearing an audience interact and enjoy themselves at a concert. It’s on my bucket list to someday go to the Bayreuth Festival and also to experience a truly great European concert performance like New Years from Vienna.

But as Operations Assistant, I know about the stress live feeds can cause station personnel. Back on Saturday, Jan 1 2005, we were caught completely off-guard when the live feed ended without playing the Radetzky March!

The Radetzky March has been a concert fixture since 1958. While I haven’t listened that long, I’ve listened long enough that it certainly was an uncomfortable and somewhat scary thing not to hear it played. Listeners were upset, and the phones went mad! Kati saved the day (in what was probably the fastest “DJ Dash” in WBJC history) by grabbing a CD recording of a live Vienna Phil concert and playing the March.

As we were working on the website today, I reminisced about that day and wondered just what had happened. A little bit of digging cleared up the mystery: Loren Maazel omitted the Radetzky March to honor the hundreds of thousands of victims of the Boxing Day Tsunami that occurred just 6 days earlier.

Now that’s class.

Fall Fundraiser success!

Our thanks to all of you who helped make our Fall pledge-drive a resounding success! The numbers are in: Our overall goal for the three days was $118k and we made $125k! We added 358 NEW members to the family and just over 1,000 of you helped us take care of business so we could get right back to broadcasting the classical music you love.

Our volunteers deserve special thanks. Without them, we would be 11 WBJC employees desperately trying to everything all at once. First time volunteer Chris Serio snapped a few pics of the fun we had. You can view them on our Flickr page here.
