This morning Marie (my partner formerly known as Mary Zajac) and I review 2 French whites! The first is the 2009 Gerard Boulay Sancerre $28 is a little steep but when you consider they have been making wine since 1380 (not 1830!!!!!) they probably know something! More than your usual SV quaffer…really worth exploring. Our second wine was the 2009 Domaine Leon Boesch Riesling from the Luss Vineyard, $24. This was a complete surprise! Not what I expected or wanted from a Riesling but a good wine nevertheless! Click below and find out about two very interesting white wines from France.
This week Mary and I review two really nice Spring whites from France neither of which will cost you an arm or a leg!
Our first wine was the 2009 Domaine Vincent Dampt Chablis. If you are tired of California big butt Chardonnays this is the wine for you. Here the noble grape is doing its classique Burgundian thing…at $22 a bottle…worth it! Don’t let California marketers from long ago spoil the word Chablis…In France it stands for great white wines.
Our second wine was the 2010 Thierry Delaunay Sauvignon Blanc vin de pays from Touraine. If you’re in Touraine you are most probably drinking Sauvignon Blanc and this is no exception. At $12 a bottle it won’t change your life but it will improve your dinner, lunch or just plain old nothing. Look for the letters TYDY on the bottle. Check out our review by clicking below!
Where is Jura? Try the Alps in France. What do they do there…Some really great sparkling wines! This week we reviewed 2 really great Cremant one white and one rose. These were the products of Andre and Mareille Tissot and will cost you about $25 a bottle. If you like crisp, clean and clear this is the sparkling wine for you. The white was a combination of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the rose was all Pinot! At about half price of a decent Champagne…it’s a no brainer!

Two absolute winners for those of us who like white wine for Spring/Summer.
1)2009 El Brozal Single Vinyard White Rioja! A mixture of a zillion grapes made in a vineyard that goes back to 1938, 1 km. southwest of El Villar! Who knew. $36 per bottle great acid nice long finish…stone fruit, yellow apples…we both liked this very much!
2)2010 Villa Solais Vermentino from Santadi. This Vermentino comes to us from Sunny Sardinia! Lush! Ripe! Soft pressed, on the lees…Beautiful! Lots of florals…gardenias galore! $16 unusual and a metziah! Click and enjoy!
As the seasons change we as humans change what we eat and drink. As it gets warmer we want to eat lighter things, cook outside and drink different wines than we drank in the bleak midwinter. Mary and I have some ideas on this matter which we are happy to share. If you have some we welcome yours!

This particular episode of Word on Wine was recorded a while ago and I thought it was worth resurrecting! A couple of years ago Food and Wine Magazine ran an article comparing fast food and wine! In other words how many calories does your average fast food burger have versus a decent Sauvignon Blanc. I’m not sure whether our intention is that you drink more or eat less fast food! Either way it is fascinating to see the numbers…Wait for the last one which compares breakfast at Friendlies to a double magnum of Dom Perignon. Enjoy!

Do you love German wines as much as we do? (We really do!) However, reading the labels can be a bit intimidating! Box Wine! Makes some people shudder! Where’s the romance. Where’s the sex, Where’s the cork! Granted there is some pretty scary box wine out there…However, Mary and I reviewed the 2009 Wurtz (please add an umlaut) Dry Riesling…three liters in a box for a mere #26.50! Such a bargain! First off the wine stays very fresh for a very long time because the bladder inside the box allows very little air. Second this is a perfectly decent Riesling which makes a great hauswein!
Mary tasted the Roederer Non Vintage Brut Champagne and didn’t invite me over. From what I can tell she and her husband Kevin had a fabulous time. $40 for the privilege but worth it. I stayed home with my box wine and sour grapes! Harumph!
