2-10-24 Music in Maryland…A Quick Tribute To Leontyne Price and Seiji Ozawa plus the BSO Playing Gershwin that isn’t Rhapsody in Blue!

Leontyne Price turned 97 today and though we paid tribute to her on the Opera Preview her recording of Samuel Barber’s Knoxville Summer of 1915 is stunning.  Also we are playing Gershwin’s Piano Concerto because everyone else is playing Rhapsody in Blue in honor of the centennial!  Finally a couple of Seiji Ozawa recordings in tribute to his many decades of great music making.  He passed earlier in the week…he was 88.

2-3-24 Music in Maryland…Rhapsody in Blue Turns 100!

Rhapsody in Blue 2020 Edition by George Gershwin | Berens Pops Library

This is the original pencil score of Rhapsody in blue which was created in January of 1924.  The orchestration was finished on February 4, 1924 and the first performance took place on February 12, 1924.

Both Rachmaninov and Heifetz were there so I though it would be nice to celebrate them as well.  Heifetz also was born on February 2 so he would have just turned 23!
