This week Music in Maryland continues  airing a series of programs based on the Beethoven Piano Sonata marathon performed in 2010 by the students of Leon Fleisher.  Join me and Peabody musicologist Ray Sprenkle as we explore Beethoven’s life and his early piano sonatas.

This week Music in Maryland (MiM) features members of the Baltimore Symphony in Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello and Dvorak’s American Quartet.  Our performers were recorded as part of the Chamber Music By Candlelight series on January 22,2012.

The Mozart featured Edward Palanker, clarinet; Ivan Stefanovic, violin; Rebecca Nichols, violin; Karin Brown, viola; Daniel Levitov, cello.

The Ravel featured Qing Li, violin; Bo Li, Cello.

The Dvorak featured Madeline Adkins, violin; Ivan Stefanovic, violin; Jonathan Carney, viola; Dariusz Skoraczewski, cello.

This week we take you back to a stellar event that took place on May 5, 2012 at the Patricia and Art Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric Opera House.  Edward Polochick conducted a massive cast that was made up of Concert Artists of Baltimore and the Peabody Orchestra and Chorus!  On the Program Carmina Burana by Orff and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms.  There is nothing more to say!  Enjoy!

This week Music in Maryland features the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jose-Luis Novo.  Our program features their concert CD Three Symphonic Centuries that was recorded on November7 & 8, 2008.  The program features Corelli’s Concerto Grosso op. 6 # 9, Beethoven’s Symphony # 5, Ravel’s Rhapsodie Espagnole and Prangcharoen’ Tri-Sattawat.  Tune in tonight @ 6 pm.  You won’t be disappointed!

This Saturday at 6 Music in Maryland (MIM) will feature the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra in music by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and Bizet.  All performances were recorded at Goucher College’s Kraushaar Auditorium.  On the program…Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir of Florence, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with soloist Madeline Adkins and Bizet’s Symphony in C.  I hope you can tune us in…the show turned out really nicely…if I say so myself!  Madeline is as usual…amazing.  After the show we feature music by local composer Jonathan Leshnoff and Dvorak.

For ages our General Manager has been interested in reviving the ancient Music In Maryland series.  For ages I have put him off.  Finally there was no avoiding it.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation and the Maryland State Arts Council Music in Maryland is back!  Our first concert was from the Chamber Music By Candlelight Series and was recorded on February 17, 2013 at the Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore.  On the program…

I Sing The Body Electric by Brian Prechtl.  A world premiere recording.  Featuring Violinist Jonathan Carney, Cellist Pei Lu, Flutist Marcia Kamper, Clarinetist William Jenken, Pianist Lura Johnson, Percussionist Brian Prechtl.  There was also a narrator who was uncredited on the recording…Hopefully someone will solve this mystery!

Violin Sonata No.  3 by Edvard Grieg.  Featuring violinist Qing Li and pianist Katherine Jacobson Fleisher.

String Quartet No.  2 by Prokofiev.  Featuring The Atlantic String Quartet.  Gregory Mulligan and Rebecca Nichols violins.  Karin Brown, viola and Bo Li, Cello.
