This week David Zinman announced that he would be retiring from his position as Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich.  I thought we would use this occasion to play some of the live recordings that he made during his 13 year tenure as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony.  Frankly these were great years for Zinman, the orchestra and for that matter the city of Baltimore.  Here are the listings…hope you enjoy the program.

This week Music in Maryland features the Post Classical Ensemble’s latest CD Dvorak and America.  This is a unique blend of music and poetry combining Longfellow’s Hiawatha and Dvorak’s New World Symphony and other pieces.  The resulting ‘melodrama’ is most intriguing.  If that weren’t enough we added some other selections from the CD and also filled in with the Baltimore Symphony’s recording of Dvorak’s 6th symphony!  Here are the listings…Enjoy!

This week we are broadcasting a concert featuring Concert Artists of Baltimore conducted by Edward Polochick.  The program was recorded on February 8 2014 and was entitled The British Connection.  On the program 2 Jamaican S0ngs by Arthur Benjamin and also his Romantic Fantasy for Violin Viola and Orchestra.  The Soloists were violinist Anton Miller and violist Rita Porfiris.   The Miller Porfiris duo gave an encore which was the Halvorsen Handel Passacaglia.  Mendelssohn’s Symphony # 3 “Scottish” Finished the live concert.  Menotti’s Sebastian Suite and Diamond’s Rounds for String Orchestra were used to fill until 8 pm.  Hope you enjoyed the show!

This week Music in Maryland continues  airing a series of programs based on the Beethoven Piano Sonata marathon performed in 2010 by the students of Leon Fleisher.  Join me and Peabody musicologist Ray Sprenkle as we explore Beethoven’s life and his middle piano sonatas.
