Recently the WBJC Newsletter asked people about their first experiences with classical music. This led us to thinking about people’s first experience with wine. Mary Zajac and I share some of our early memories!
Cheers,
Jonathan Palevsky

Two absolute winners for those of us who like white wine for Spring/Summer.
1)2009 El Brozal Single Vinyard White Rioja! A mixture of a zillion grapes made in a vineyard that goes back to 1938, 1 km. southwest of El Villar! Who knew. $36 per bottle great acid nice long finish…stone fruit, yellow apples…we both liked this very much!
2)2010 Villa Solais Vermentino from Santadi. This Vermentino comes to us from Sunny Sardinia! Lush! Ripe! Soft pressed, on the lees…Beautiful! Lots of florals…gardenias galore! $16 unusual and a metziah! Click and enjoy!
C Street Brass, a fabulously talented Brass Quintet made up of students who are soon to graduate from Peabody, is returning to Baltimore City Community College’s Fine Arts Theater. If you are looking for a group that is both musically solid and entertaining this is the concert for you…But wait there’s more! The concert is free and open to the public! BCCC’s Fine Arts Theater is located at 2901 Liberty Heights Avenue. Liberty Heights corner Druid Park Drive. The Fine Arts Theater is at the back of the campus and parking is available behind the theater. The concert begins at 1:00 pm. and should last an hour. Hope to see you there.
Last week I talked with Gabriel Colby of C Street Brass…he proved to be a very engaging individual!
This coming Wednesday 5/2 Marin Alsop will be coming to Beth El Congregation (8101 Park Heights Avenue) in Baltimore to talk about her relationship with Leonard Bernstein. It should be a really interesting event and a chance to get to know a new side of Maestra Alsop. Admission is free and the event is open to all. Hope you can make it.
Earlier this week I talked with Eyal Bor from Beth El about the event and Beth El’s new adult education program.

As the seasons change we as humans change what we eat and drink. As it gets warmer we want to eat lighter things, cook outside and drink different wines than we drank in the bleak midwinter. Mary and I have some ideas on this matter which we are happy to share. If you have some we welcome yours!
Cheers,
This particular episode of Word on Wine was recorded a while ago and I thought it was worth resurrecting! A couple of years ago Food and Wine Magazine ran an article comparing fast food and wine! In other words how many calories does your average fast food burger have versus a decent Sauvignon Blanc. I’m not sure whether our intention is that you drink more or eat less fast food! Either way it is fascinating to see the numbers…Wait for the last one which compares breakfast at Friendlies to a double magnum of Dom Perignon. Enjoy!
Don’t miss this week’s great Russian program with the BSO! Lionel Bringuier makes his debut with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, featuring Concertmaster Jonathan Carney, and Moussorgsky’s Night on a Bald Mountain! Sounds Fabulous!
I had the pleasure of talking to Lionel Bringuier earlier in the week…enjoy!
Gewalt!
Do you love German wines as much as we do? (We really do!) However, reading the labels can be a bit intimidating! This week Mary Zajac and Jonathan Palevsky go through the label of a really nice Riesling one line at a time. Even if you don’t speak German you can learn a lot from the label. Click below to listen and Cheers!
Box Wine! Makes some people shudder! Where’s the romance. Where’s the sex, Where’s the cork! Granted there is some pretty scary box wine out there…However, Mary and I reviewed the 2009 Wurtz (please add an umlaut) Dry Riesling…three liters in a box for a mere #26.50! Such a bargain! First off the wine stays very fresh for a very long time because the bladder inside the box allows very little air. Second this is a perfectly decent Riesling which makes a great hauswein!
Mary tasted the Roederer Non Vintage Brut Champagne and didn’t invite me over. From what I can tell she and her husband Kevin had a fabulous time. $40 for the privilege but worth it. I stayed home with my box wine and sour grapes! Harumph!
Quiz Master Mary and I explore the World of Wne in three trivia questions. We all learn something and everybody is a winner.
