03/26/12 Word On Wine Review. Two Guys From the Rhone!

This morning Marie Zajaque et moi Jonathan Palevsky talk about two wines from the Rhone Valley in France.  These wines are produced by the Negociantes Dauvergne & Ranvier  Francois Dauvergne and Jean-Francois Ranvier are more than just your typical Negociantes they participate actively in their relationship with growers to the benefit of all.

We reviewed Dauvergne & Ranvier’s  2010 Luberon.  $12.  Also reviewed was Dauvergne & Ranvier’s 2001 Cotes Du Rhone, $14.

Cheers,

Mary Zajac and Jonathan Palevsky

03/22/12 Word on Wine – Cork

One would think that using a natural product like cork, which comes from cork trees, would be a strain on the environment and that using metal screw tops or synthetic corks that don’t come from trees would be a good thing.  However, a recent article sighted in this week’s Word on Wine reveals that cork forests provide a fabulous environment for all kinds of wildlife.  If cork is harvested correctly the trees can last for centuries!  Check out this week’s Word On Wine to learn all about it!

03/19/12 Word on Wine 3 whites each for less than $10!

This week’s Word On Wine is actually a repeat…(Mary and I will be tasting again on Monday!  Yeah!

Even though these are older vintages newer versions of these wine are our and worth finding.

1)Good old reliable Hugl Gruner Veltliner.  Despite the ugly bottle you can find a liter of it for around $10.  I just enjoyed a bottle of it not too long ago!

2)South Africa Peter Kreutoff  stein or Chenin blanc.  I couldn’t find a listing for this wine but there are no lack of inexpensive steins to find.  The grape is the same as Chenin Blanc and worth exploring.

3)Crucero Sauvignon Blanc from the Curico Valley in Chile.  Also a winner at a relatively low price.  In fact with newer wineries opening on the coast Chile is starting to produce some very decent whites.

Marriage of Figaro Comes to the Lyric This Weekend March 9 and 11!

My favorite opera comes to the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore this week.  Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro is nothing short of fantastic.  3 hours of sex, art, comedy and great music.  I spoke with Maestro Joseph Rescigno earlier today.  For more information and tickets call the Patricia and Art Model Performing Arts Center at the Lyric at 410-900-1150.

Lotta Art Is Back!

WBJC is thoroughly proud to be the media sponsor for this year’s Lotta Art.  I have been attending Lotta Art for Years and I think it is the most exciting fundraiser in Baltimore.  Lotta Art Supports School 33 which is a wonderful Baltimore City art education program.  What is remarkable about Lotta Art is that everyone who buys an art ticket goes home with a piece of art!  The piece of art you end up with is determined by a lottery (hence the title) and whomever is picked first gets first choice…consequently whomever is picked last gets what is left!  However, since people’s taste in art is so subjective and so different (ie. beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder) everyone goes home happy.  I counted last night and I have 8 Lotta Art pieces in my home and I love them all!  I am thrilled to be be the emcee for the event and can’t wait to see who gets what!  In addition to the art madness that occurs Lotta Art is a great party…copious food and drink and located in Silo Point…a lovely part of town.  Hope you can make it…Here is a link to School 33 for more information…You can also click on the link below to hear an interview I did with exhibit coordinator Rene Trevino.
