This week Tom Hall leads the full Chorus and Orchestra in Beethoven’s “Elegiac Song,” Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus,” and Bach’s “Magnificat.” Baltimore Symphony Principal Trumpet Andrew Balio and soprano Nola Richardson open the program with Bach’s Cantata No. 51. A varied program showcasing some of the greatest classical composers.  The concert was recorded at Goucher College Kraushaar Auditorium on October 25, 2014.   For fill we used a really nice new CD by local early music masters Harmonious Blacksmith called Espanoletas.

This week’s Music in Maryland is a concert from the current season of the Annapolis Symphony recorded on October 17 and 18 2014.  This was also an auspicious event as this was their first concerts in their newly remodeled hall.

Maestro Jose-Luis Novo conducted the orchestra in Handel’s Music For The Royal Fireworks, Falla’s Nights in the Garden of Spain and Nielsen’s Symphony # 4, “The Inextinguishable”.  The soloist for the Falla was pianist Angela Cheng.

This week the Post Classical Ensemble plays Dvorak!  Our concert was recorded at Dekelbaum Hall, University of Maryland College Park,  March 1, 2013.  On the program the Dvorak Serenade for Strings and the American Suite.  Thanks so much to their Artistic Director Joseph Horowitz and to their Music Director Angel Gil-Ordonez for providing the recording.  Hope you like the show.

This week Music in Maryland features a concert from the Candlelight Concert Society from April 14 2012.  The Pacifica Quartet perform on their own and joined by pianist Christopher Shih.  On the program Beethoven’s String Quartet op. 18 # 6, Shostakovich’s String Quartet # 9 op. 117 and Schumann’s Piano Quintet.

This week we are featuring Horn Soloist Gregory Miller and pianist Ernest Barretta in a recital recorded at the University of Maryland College Park Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.   This recording was designed to feature the Conn 8D horn that Gregory Miller purchased from his teacher Robert Fries.  Robert Fries, in addition to teaching Greg Miller, was also Co-Principal horn of the Philadelphia Orchestra and you can also hear his work on those excellent Mercury Living Presence recordings with Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony.  Here is our program for tonight.

This week Music in Maryland returns to the fine musicians of the Baltimore Symphony in a concert which features music by George Auric, Mark O’Connor and Sergei Prokofiev.  The concert was recorded at Second Presbyterian Church on September 25, 2011.

Baltimore Choral Arts – From Madrigals to Musicals

This week Tom Hall leads the Choral Arts Society in a program spanning the poetic choral repertoire, from the 16th century to works of Durufle and Lauridsen, and leading to selections from the iconic musicals of Leonard Bernsteinand Rogers and Hammerstein.  Internationally-renowned soprano Janice Chandler-Eteme joins Tom and the Chorus for this exciting performance. This concert was recorded at the Towson United Methodist Church Sunday March 9, 2014.

This week Music in Maryland presents a concert featuring the Harlem Quartet playing music by Turina, Haydn, Corea, Mozart, and Piston.  This concert was recorded as part of last season’s Candlelight Concert Society series in Columbia.  The concert took place on Saturday February 2, 2013 at the Horowitz Center – Smith Theatre, Howard Community College.

After the concert I played some excerpts from Lura Johnson’s latest CD entitled Turning.  We heard the Brahms op. 118 piano pieces and Rachmaninov’s arrangement of Bach’s Violin Partita # 3.
